The Impact of Globalization on Everyday Life Essay

â€Å"Those from below are not those who get to write history, even though they are the ones making it† (Ainger Internet). This may have been the thought in the minds of 20,000 Thais on January 25, 1997. They represented a portion of the population that had been negatively affected by big dam projects, small farmers that were struggling to live the life their family has led for centuries, or fisher-folk that find it harder everyday to fish in the polluted waters of a developing nation. Feeling left out of the Tiger Economy, this â€Å"Assembly of the Poor† marched up to the Government House in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, and camped in the streets for ninety-nine days. This brave new world presents many changes to people around the glo be; unfortunately, most of these changes have negatively affected many specific groups and the everyday lives of people worldwide. Granted, arguments can be made on behalf of the global economy. In Business Week, Geri Smith describes a prosperous Tijuana in her article, â€Å"The Decline of the Maquiladora.† For 20 years, globalization had brought jobs to Tijuana, and given people there a stable income that they had never had before. Tijuana proved to be an ideal home for companies such as Sanyo, which used Tijuana’s ready and able labor force to help the company grow (59). As the companies became more prosperous and looked to expand, it opens even more factories in the Tijuana area, therefore supporting even more people who need jobs. With factory space relatively cheap and The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in place, which assures cross-border companies of free trade, Tijuana and its surrounding area became a prosperous sector of Mexico. The new jobholders were able to produce 50 percent of Mexico’s exports, shipping out $76.8 billion from the Tijuana area alone (5 9). A favorable balance of trade has brought wealth south of the border.
